Why Organic ?

You have no doubt heard the term "Organic" before but what exactly is meant by "organic" gardening ? I have read many articles from "plant scientists" who regard the term "organic" as being redundant, because 'organic' in this sense refers to anything containing carbon. ALL plants contain Carbon so in that manner All plants ARE Organic. Organic Gardening however, refers to the media in which the plants grow such as soil, potting mixes and the like as well as the additives used to stimulate and encourage plant growth and control pest and disease.

Organic gardening is not wrong or mystical ... one can not do wrong adding large amounts of organic matter to the soil. Organic gardening began by encouraging the use of organic matter in the soil, as well as the understanding that the organic matter needs to be constantly added to as it breaks down to prevent the soil from deteriorating. Organic Gardening is often thought to be something relatively new and is often referred to when thinking of the "hippies" in the 1960's. In truth however, Organic Gardening has been around for hundreds of years. Before synthetic chemicals were "needed" to control pests, gardeners and farmers used natural methods to produce quality crops.

Hundreds of years ago gardeners would get their organic materials from animal manures, or from peat, rotting grass and hay and other organic materials which today makes the best compost.

Instead of using synthetic, man made pesticides to kill pests and disease, Organic farmers prevent pests by planting a diverse range of crops, by rotating these crops and using environmentally friendly approaches.

Maintaining healthy plants is the best way to avoid Pests & Disease. Soil Rich in Organic Matter is a great starting point. Companion planting is a great way of keeping the nitrogen level up in the soil. In the vegetable garden you can mix Legume crops such as peas and beans with root crops such as carrots. Alternate planting's between rows of carrots and rows of peas or beans etc.

The importance of going Organic can not be overstated. From our Garden Management to our food, beverages and skin care production. We can all do a little towards accomplishing a lot.

Organic Horticulture & Agriculture is a way of producing crops without damaging our environment and without the need for synthetic chemicals.

Organic food comes from Organic farms that use traditional agriculture with modern techniques.

Instead of using synthetic, man made pesticides to kill pests and disease, Organic farmers prevent pests by planting a diverse range of crops, by rotating these crops and using environmentally friendly approaches.

Ultimately, this results in no artificial pesticides, herbicides, no hormones and no growth promotents.

Organic Farmers aim to prevent pests and disease by using natural means, instead of a REACTIVE pest and disease management system.

Organically grown and processed food and personal care products are allowed only minimal processing with a limited number of non-agricultural, but natural and traditional ingredients allowed. These processes allow Mother Nature to provide us with food the way it was meant to be.
